Jonathan Taylor, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, South Dakota 2019
A 27-year-old man from Miller, South Dakota, has been sentenced for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
On August 12, 2019, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Johnathan Taylor to time served, two years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Taylor was convicted of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and was also ordered to forfeit his interest in six firearms, as well as any and all ammunition recovered with the weapons.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on December 1, 2018, when a South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Officer encountered Taylor, who was found to be in possession of a pump-action shotgun.
When the officer discovered that Taylor was an individual prohibited from possessing a firearm, a search warrant was executed on Taylor's residence, resulting in the seizure of the six firearms and the discovery of marijuana.
Taylor admitted to using marijuana daily for about eight years.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
The PSN program was reinvigorated by the U.S. Attorney's Office in 2017 as part of its renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case.
Jonathan Taylor was released following sentencing.
