Jordan James Booker, Possession of Firearm by Marijuana User, Iowa 2020

Published August 5, 2020

A Waterloo man who fired a warning shot to scare another person off his property has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing firearms.

Jordan James Booker, 23, received the prison term after a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a marijuana user on January 6, 2020.

The crime occurred on March 9, 2019, when an individual attempted to buy a television from Booker with a counterfeit $100 bill. When that individual refused to leave, Booker fired a shot into the ground.

Officers recovered a second firearm from a closet in Booker's residence. Booker admitted to being a lifelong marijuana user.

Booker was sentenced by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids to 24 months' imprisonment. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with prevention and reentry programs.

This case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department's initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.

Booker was released on bond and is to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons at a date yet to be set.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and investigated by the Waterloo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
