Jordan Kinney, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, West Virginia 2021

A Charleston, West Virginia man has been sentenced to 100 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jordan Kinney, 23, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. after admitting to possessing a loaded Taurus 9mm caliber handgun on June 14, 2019. Kinney used the handgun to shoot approximately six times at another individual and then fled the scene, discarding the handgun in the front yard of a residence a few blocks away.

The following day, officers with the Charleston Police Department recovered the handgun, which was critical to the success of the prosecution. Kinney was not allowed to possess the firearm because he had previously been convicted of robbery in the second degree.

The Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation. Former Assistant United States Attorney Ryan A. Saunders and Assistant United States Attorney Nowles H. Heinrich handled the prosecution.

Kinney's federal prison sentence will be served consecutively with any state sentence he may receive. The crime occurred in Charleston, West Virginia on June 14, 2019.

Kinney is not eligible to possess a firearm due to his previous conviction. The incident highlights the importance of ballistics information in solving crimes.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Charleston Police Department worked together to bring Kinney to justice.
