Jory D'Michael Trayvunn Dumas, Casino Theft, Alabama 2019
A brazen heist at the Wind Creek Casino in Montgomery, Alabama, has led to the conviction of 28-year-old Jory D'Michael Trayvunn Dumas.
On Thursday, November 14, 2019, a federal jury found Dumas guilty of theft from a gaming establishment on tribal lands and conspiracy.
The jury's verdict was handed down after a trial that revealed Dumas' involvement in the theft of nearly $200,000 from the Wind Creek Casino.
According to evidence presented at trial, Dumas conspired with relatives Timothy Dean Pettiway and Tameka Thomas to steal the cash. Dumas had previously recruited a casino employee, Courtney Deandra Stanton, to give him access to keys to the cash kiosks.
On August 10, 2018, Dumas, Pettiway, and Thomas carried out the heist, with Dumas forcing entry into the cash boxes and hiding the money on his person. The trio made off with $192,800.
Pettiway was previously sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for his role in the crime. Thomas and Stanton have pled guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
Dumas was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals to await sentencing, where he faces up to 20 years in prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
The investigation into the case was led by the Poarch Creek Tribal Police, the Poarch Creek Indian Gaming Commission, and the FBI, with Assistant United States Attorneys Ben Baxley and Stephanie Billingslea prosecuting the case.
