A brazen crime in the heart of Massachusetts has led to a 45-year-old man being sentenced to 267 days in prison and three years of supervised release.
Jose Luis Sanchez, a Springfield man, was sentenced on Friday, October 23, 2020 in federal court in Springfield for breaking into a postal vehicle and stealing the mail inside.
According to court records, on August 16, 2017, Sanchez broke into a postal vehicle by breaking a window and then stole mail that was inside. Investigators identified Sanchez using DNA and fingerprints that were left behind on the vehicle by Sanchez when he broke the window.
The theft of US mail and destruction of government property are serious crimes that have consequences. Sanchez pleaded guilty to these charges in March 2020, and now faces the music.
The US Attorney's Office in Massachusetts, along with the US Postal Inspection Service and the Springfield Police Department, worked together to bring Sanchez to justice.
Assistant US Attorney Neil L. Desroches of Lelling's Springfield Branch Office prosecuted the case, securing a guilty plea and a stiff sentence for Sanchez.
