Jose Montalban, 42, Sentenced to 15 Years for Brutal Stabbing of Correctional Officer

A federal jury delivered a guilty verdict against Jose Montalban, a 42-year-old inmate at the United States Penitentiary at Canaan in Pennsylvania, for assaulting a correctional officer and possessing a weapon on prison grounds.

On December 28, 2012, Montalban, who was serving a federal prison sentence for bank robbery, walked into an office at USP-Canaan and took a six-inch sharpened plastic knife. He then stabbed a correctional officer three times in the face before being subdued by other correctional officers.

The correctional officer sustained three puncture wounds to the face, which required nine sutures at a local hospital. The brutal attack was described as ‘unprovoked’ by authorities.

The case was investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney John Gurganus prosecuted the case.

On February 12, 2014, a jury found Montalban guilty of the assault and the illegal possession of a weapon by an inmate. United States District Court Judge Malachy E. Mannion has since sentenced Montalban to 15 years’ imprisonment.

United States Attorney Peter Smith stated that the evidence at trial established that Montalban’s actions were deliberate and violent. ‘The defendant’s actions were a clear threat to the safety of the correctional officers and the general public,’ Smith said.

Judge Mannion’s decision to sentence Montalban to 15 years’ imprisonment sends a strong message that such violent behavior will not be tolerated in our prisons.
