Rapid City Man Sentenced for Felony Child Abuse and Neglect

A Rapid City man has been sentenced for Felony Child Abuse and Neglect. Joseph Briseno, 41, was convicted of the crime, which involved inappropriately touching his stepdaughter between 2013 and 2016.

Briseno, a resident of Rapid City, South Dakota, was sentenced on January 28, 2019, to 60 months in federal prison, followed by 1 year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction stems from an indictment by a federal grand jury on August 22, 2017. This case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.

Briseno was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after sentencing.

The sentencing is a result of a lengthy investigation into allegations of child abuse and neglect. The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked tirelessly to gather evidence and build a case against Briseno.

Briseno's crimes will not be tolerated in our community. We must take action to protect our children and ensure that those who harm them are held accountable.
