Published August 8, 2022

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A Mason County man is facing serious consequences for his role in a disturbing child pornography case.

According to court documents, Joseph Curtis Hubman, 50, of Henderson, pleaded guilty to possession of prepubescent child pornography. The crime dates back to November 11, 2020, when law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Hubman's residence.

During the search, officers recovered multiple external hard drives, mobile phones, two desktop computers, and a micro SD memory card. A forensic analysis of the devices revealed more than 10,000 videos depicting child pornography. Hubman admitted that he possessed the child pornography, and that it included videos of prepubescent minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

As a result of his guilty plea, Hubman is scheduled to be sentenced on November 14, 2022. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Hubman must also register as a sex offender.

United States Attorney Will Thompson commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Mason County Sheriff's Department, and the West Virginia State Police in bringing Hubman to justice.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. Led by U.S. Attorneys' Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

Hubman's case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of child pornography and the importance of continued efforts to combat this heinous crime.
