Joseph J. Punderson, Child Pornography Receipt and Possession, New Jersey 2023
TRENTON, N.J. – A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to light in Ocean County, New Jersey, with the arrest of 31-year-old Joseph J. Punderson of Island Heights.
According to authorities, Punderson is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. The charges carry serious consequences, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in prison for the receipt of child pornography. The possession charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison.
The charges stem from an investigation led by law enforcement, which uncovered evidence that Punderson's email and social media accounts were linked to accounts used in the commission of suspected child pornography offenses between May 2019 and November 2019.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Atlantic City, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, and the Island Heights Police Department with the investigation leading to today’s arrest.
Punderson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Tonianne J. Bongiovanni by videoconference and was detained without bail.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander E. Ramey of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton.
It is essential to note that the charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
