Joseph Lee King, Domestic Assault - Habitual Offender, Michigan 2018

Published December 6, 2018

In a shocking turn of events, 59-year-old Joseph Lee King, a Peshawbestown man, has been sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for Domestic Assault - Habitual Offender. This crime was committed on the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians' Reservation in Michigan.

The sentencing, which took place on not specified, came after King pled guilty on July 26, 2018. King's admission to the crime revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior, where he was accused of grabbing the victim by the throat, practically lifting her off the ground by the neck, and then throwing her to the ground. This violent act left the victim with bruising and discoloration on and around her neck.

King's prior convictions for domestic violence subjected him to increased penalties under federal law. The United States had jurisdiction over the case because it occurred in Indian Country. The Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean M. Lewis prosecuting the case.

The U.S. Attorney's Office emphasized the need to protect the public and promote respect for the law in light of the facts that domestic violence often causes severe, ongoing harm to women and is a risk factor for future domestic homicide. King's conduct was deemed extremely dangerous and posed great risk to its victims, the United States argued.

In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney imposed a 2-year term of supervised release that will commence once King is released from imprisonment. This sentence underscores the gravity of King's crimes and the need for accountability in our society.

As a community, we must stand together against domestic violence and support those affected by it. The sentencing of Joseph Lee King serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of such crimes and the importance of seeking justice for victims.
