A Parmelee, South Dakota man has been sentenced for his role in a disturbing child abuse incident. Joseph Morrisette, 43, was found guilty of child abuse after a federal grand jury indicted him on August 21, 2013.

According to court documents, Morrisette was babysitting several children at his home while he was drinking on July 9, 2013. While intoxicated, he struck one of the children, resulting in a black eye. Morrisette later pleaded guilty to the charges on September 16, 2013.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Morrisette was sentenced to 9 months of custody, 18 months of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on November 26, 2013.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.
