Joseph Wing Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Assault with Intent to Murder
A 28-year-old inmate at the United States Penitentiary Canaan in Waymart, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting a fellow inmate with the intent to commit murder.
Joseph Wing, who was serving a 540-month sentence at the time of the May 16, 2014, assault, will begin serving today’s sentence after he completes serving the 540-month sentence. Wing was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2014, as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Prisons staff.
According to United States Attorney Peter Smith, Wing admitted to assaulting his fellow inmate with the intent to commit murder. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa. Judge James M. Munley sentenced Wing to the statutory maximum of 20 years in prison.
Wing will also be required to pay restitution to the Bureau of Prisons for its costs associated with the medical treatment of the victim. The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons staff.
