SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – A former high school coach in New York has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his role in distributing and possessing child pornography.

A 38-year-old man, Joshua Demars, of Fulton, New York, was convicted of multiple charges of receipt, transportation, and possession of child pornography. The charges stem from his use of the Snapchat application to communicate with minors and receive images and videos of child pornography.

Demars also admitted to using his Dropbox account to upload a video of a 5–7-year-old female being sexually abused by an adult male. Additionally, he acknowledged possessing hundreds of videos and images of child pornography on several of his personal devices.

Following his conviction, Demars was sentenced to serve 12 years in federal prison, with a 10-year term of supervised release upon his release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to the victims he solicited on Snapchat.

The case was investigated by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the New York State Police (NYSP) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the NYSP Troop D Computer Crime Unit.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, Matthew Scarpino, Special Agent in Charge of HSI, Buffalo Field Office, and NYSP Superintendent Steven G. James made the announcement.

Under the supervision of the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
