Joshua Ray Campbell, Mail and Identity Theft, Oklahoma 2019
A former Oklahoma City mail and shipping store owner was sentenced to 42 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme to steal mail and identities from unsuspecting residents.
Joshua Ray Campbell, 41, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit theft or receipt of stolen mail and aggravated identity theft in relation to bank fraud, announced United States Attorney Timothy J. Downing.
Campbell, who owned a commercial mail receiving business in Oklahoma City, worked with others to steal mail from mailboxes at his business and around Oklahoma City in order to convert stolen mail to cash and steal the identities of mail recipients.
The scheme also involved Campbell using the identity of one of his victims to commit bank fraud, according to a superseding information.
Campbell was sentenced to 42 months in prison, followed by a 3-year term of supervised release. He must also pay restitution of $49,154.33 to his victims.
Campbell's co-conspirator, Gena Michele Walker, was previously sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to possess stolen mail.
The charges against Campbell were the result of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Nicoma Park Police Department, the Village Police Department, and the Edmond Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. Farrior.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting one's identity and mail from theft. Residents are advised to take extra precautions to secure their mail and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Campbell's sentence is a result of his guilty plea on October 7, 2019, to one count of conspiracy to commit theft or receipt of stolen mail and one count of aggravated identity theft in relation to bank fraud.
