Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Methamphetamine Conspiracy, Florida 2023
A massive methamphetamine trafficking operation in Southwest Florida has been dealt a significant blow with the guilty plea of a high-ranking cartel member. Juan Carlos Gonzalez, a 37-year-old San Diego, California resident, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than 11 pounds of methamphetamine in Lee County.
On April 17, 2017, Gonzalez sent nearly two pounds of 99% pure methamphetamine to a DEA undercover agent in Fort Myers. This shipment was the first of many, as Gonzalez went on to send over nine more pounds of the highly addictive and potent drug to the agent in the following months.
Gonzalez's supply of methamphetamine was described as "unlimited" by the defendant himself in conversations with the undercover agent. DEA laboratory testing confirmed that all of the shipments were 100% pure methamphetamine.
On August 16, 2017, Gonzalez was arrested by federal agents at the San Ysidro port of entry as he attempted to enter the United States from Mexico.
Gonzalez's guilty plea exposes a significant threat to the community. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive and destructive drug that can have devastating consequences for users and their loved ones.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Michael V. Leeman is prosecuting the case.
Gonzalez faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years, up to life, in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set. This case is a prime example of the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies in keeping our communities safe from the scourge of illicit narcotics.
