Julio Cesar Baez, Fentanyl Conspiracy, Massachusetts 2018
BOSTON, Massachusetts - A devastating fentanyl conspiracy has led to the downfall of yet another individual. Julio Cesar Baez, 50, a Dominican national, was sentenced yesterday to 30 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his role in the conspiracy to distribute the deadly synthetic opioid.
According to court records, Baez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute more than 400 grams or more of fentanyl, and one count of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of more than 400 grams of fentanyl. The charges stem from a lengthy investigation into a fentanyl trafficking ring, which has resulted in several convictions, including that of Wareng Jhonny Villar-Ortiz, a mid-level drug distributor.
On February 14, 2018, law enforcement agents observed Baez exit a vehicle and enter a second vehicle, which was then stopped by officers. The subsequent search of the vehicle revealed approximately 789 grams of fentanyl, a staggering amount that highlights the dangers of fentanyl trafficking.
As a runner responsible for delivering fentanyl from the supplier, Baez played a crucial role in the conspiracy. Three other members of the conspiracy, including Villar-Ortiz, have been convicted in connection with the investigation, but have not yet been sentenced.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Division, with valuable assistance provided by the Boston, Ipswich, and Arlington Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney James E. Arnold of the Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit prosecuted the case.
In a statement, the authorities emphasized the severity of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The sentencing of Julio Cesar Baez serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such activities.
