Kamarcio Mitchell, Unlawful Firearm Possession, Florida 2024

Published February 20, 2024

MIAMI - A South Florida man is facing serious charges after being arrested in connection to a shooting at the Palm Beach Gardens Mall on Valentine's Day.

Kamarcio Mitchell, 28, of West Palm Beach, was taken into custody on February 16 after a joint response by local, state, and federal law enforcement partners following the incident.

According to allegations in the criminal complaint, Mitchell was at the Palm Beach Gardens Mall on February 14 when he was involved in a shooting. Surveillance video captured Mitchell on the second level of the mall near a retail store, where he was seen manipulating an object under his shirt. Mitchell then followed another male onto the escalator and was fired upon by the other male, suffering a gunshot wound.

Mitchell fled the mall to the parking lot, leaving a trail of blood behind him. A loaded firearm that had been disassembled was found in the parking lot by police, near the blood trail. Mitchell was later treated for his injury at a local hospital, where he admitted to being shot.

The investigation by law enforcement determined that the firearm found in the mall parking lot was a loaded handgun that had previously traveled in interstate commerce. Mitchell, a convicted felon, is charged in the criminal complaint as an Armed Career Criminal. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 15 years to a maximum sentence of life.

The United States has sought the pretrial detention of Mitchell, with a detention hearing scheduled for February 27. An arraignment hearing is set for March 5.

The arrest and charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida, Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B. Veltri of the FBI, Miami Field Office, Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division, U.S. Marshal Gadyaces S. Serralta of the U.S. Marshals Service, Chief Clinton Shannon of the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, and Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The Office of State Attorney Dave Aronberg for the 15th Judicial Circuit – Palm Beach County provided invaluable assistance. Assistant United States Attorney John McMillan is prosecuting the case.

This prosecution is part of the U.S. Attorney's Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, which focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to reduce violent crime and gun violence.

A criminal complaint contains allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
