Kendra Carol Cook, Assault, Montana 2023
BILLINGS, Montana – Kendra Carol Cook, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury after a rollover crash on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
According to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, Cook faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release on each count.
The accident occurred on May 18, 2023, when Cook's vehicle rolled north of Lame Deer, injuring Cook and two of her passengers. Cook was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
A witness reported finding two women who were injured and told her that Cook had left the scene. One of the passengers, Jane Doe 2, stated that Cook was drinking whiskey before picking her up and that they were drinking while driving to Lame Deer.
Cook claimed she and the passengers were fighting over the alcohol, but Jane Doe 1 denied any fighting and stated that Cook was intentionally trying to wreck the vehicle. Doe 1 estimated Cook was driving approximately 80 miles per hour and slowed to approximately 60 mph when they started swerving.
The rollover occurred in a 35-mph speed zone, and both victims suffered fractures and other serious injuries. U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Cavan presided over the guilty plea, and a sentencing date will be set before U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters.
Cook was detained pending further proceedings.
The court will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
