Kerry Sloan, 56, was sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. U.S. District Judge Claire V. Eagan handed down the sentence on Monday, in the Northern District of Oklahoma. Sloan was also ordered to serve 10 years on supervised release following completion of his prison term. During this time, he will have to comply with numerous requirements designed to restrict his access to minors.
Kerry Sloan will also be ordered to register as a sex offender. The former track coach, who resided in Harker Heights, Texas, was arrested for his crimes in 2017 while driving a teenage minor victim from Texas to Tulsa for meetings with college coaches. However, his true intent was to sexually assault her.
During his plea hearing, Sloan admitted to sexually assaulting the victim during the car ride and raping her at a Tulsa hotel. He also admitted to not letting the victim out of his car after the incidents, eventually stopping the vehicle when the victim was able to contact her family and call 911. Pittsburg County Sheriff's Deputies stopped the vehicle and rescued the victim.
Investigations revealed that Sloan had been accused of similar incidents dating back to 1990 while he was serving in the U.S. Army. The Tulsa Police Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, Army Criminal Investigation Division, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, and Killeen Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Nassar prosecuted the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. The program marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
