Connecticut Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Attempted Receipt of Child Pornography
In a shocking revelation, a 32-year-old man from Colchester, Connecticut, has been sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for attempting to receive child pornography. The sentencing took place on July 22, 2019, before Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken of the U.S. District Court.
Kevin Carney, the defendant, was one of nine men arrested and federally indicted as a result of an undercover sex trafficking operation conducted during the 2017 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. The operation targeted individuals willing to pay for sex with underage girls or boys obtained through the Internet.
According to the investigation, Carney communicated with someone he believed to be a minor for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts and requested that the minor send pornographic images to him. The conviction stemmed from this communication.
The undercover operation and arrests were a joint effort between the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins prosecuted the case.
Carney was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The defendant was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of child exploitation and the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to combat it. The sentence handed down to Kevin Carney serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of attempting to receive child pornography.
In addition to his prison sentence, Carney will also serve 5 years of supervised release following his incarceration.
