Postal Worker Charged with Obstructing Mail Service

A former United States Postal Service employee has been charged with obstructing mail service in a case that highlights the importance of postal integrity.

Kevin Hart, a 31-year-old resident of Marrero, Louisiana, was charged on July 12, 2022, with one count of obstruction of mail, announced United States Attorney Duane A. Evans.

According to court documents, Hart was employed by the United States Postal Service as a City Carrier Associate at the Johnson Street Post Office in Metairie, Louisiana. On or about July 1, 2021, Hart knowingly and willfully did obstruct and retard the passage of the mail by unlawfully secreting, destroying, detaining, and delaying approximately 236 pieces of mail that were recovered from a dumpster in Metairie.

The obstruction of mail is a serious offense that can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and businesses who rely on the postal service. The United States Attorney's Office is committed to ensuring that those who compromise the integrity of the postal system are held accountable.

Hart faces a maximum penalty of up to six months imprisonment, up to a $5,000 fine or the greater of twice the gross gain to the defendant or twice the gross loss to any person under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3571, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee if convicted.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachal Cassagne is in charge of the prosecution.
