South Bend Man Sentenced to 66 Months in Prison for Fentanyl Trafficking

A South Bend man has been sentenced to 66 months in prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation in the city. Kevin Pope Jr., 39, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

According to court documents, Pope sold methamphetamine and fentanyl to a buyer in South Bend on five occasions in October and November 2024. Police executed a search warrant at his house in December 2024 and found over 30 grams of fentanyl, a kilogram of pills containing methamphetamine, about 90 grams of cocaine, and over $22,000 in cash. They also found a loaded handgun.

The investigation into Pope's activities was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the South Bend Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joel Gabrielse.

Pope's sentence includes 66 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. The exact amount of fentanyl and other substances seized by police is a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl trafficking in our community.

As our community continues to grapple with the effects of the opioid epidemic, it's more important than ever that we hold those responsible for fentanyl trafficking accountable. Pope's sentence sends a clear message that fentanyl trafficking will not be tolerated in our city.

With the help of law enforcement and the justice system, we can work towards a safer and healthier community for all.
