Kevin R. Hicks, Mail Theft, Indiana 2024
Postal Worker Charged with Stealing Packages Containing Prescription Medications
EVANSVILLE, IN - In a shocking case of public corruption, a postal employee has been indicted for stealing mail packages containing prescription medications intended for veterans.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Kevin R. Hicks, 53, of Evansville, Indiana, was charged with theft of mail matter by an employee. The indictment was the result of an investigation conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the United States Postal Service Inspector General, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Evansville Police Department.
“Public corruption is one of the highest priorities of this office,” said Josh Minkler, Acting United States Attorney. “Those who choose to betray the public’s trust will be held accountable and face the full force of federal law.”
The investigation revealed that Hicks had allegedly stolen over 23 packages containing prescription medications, including hydrocodone, a pain relief medication, for personal use. As a manager at the Evansville Postal Processing and Distribution Facility, Hicks had an opportunity to steal U.S. mail.
Hicks could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. He will be summoned to appear before a magistrate judge in Evansville.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The U.S. Attorney's Office established a Public Integrity Working Group in April 2012, with the stated purpose of aggressively investigating allegations of public fraud, waste and abuse by public officials in Indiana. Individuals with information on public corruption are encouraged to contact the U.S. Attorney's Office at (317) 229-2443.
