Sex Trafficking Scheme Unfolds in Pittsburgh
A sinister plot to recruit and exploit four female minors for sex trafficking has been laid bare in a Pittsburgh courtroom. Kiari Nicole Day, 26, of Rankin, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
As part of the plea agreement, Day acknowledged knowingly entering into a scheme to recruit minors for sex trafficking in February 2015. The consequences of her actions are severe, with a potential sentence of up to life in prison, a fine of $250,000, and a term of supervised release of no more than five years.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the guilty plea, highlighting the importance of addressing the scourge of child sexual exploitation. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the government in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police, has brought Day to justice. Assistant United States Attorneys Jessica Lieber Smolar and Katherine A. King are prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
Sentencing is scheduled for December 1, 2015, at 9 a.m. before United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. The law provides for a maximum sentence of life, a fine of $250,000, and a term of supervised release of no more than five years.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from exploitation and abuse. The government's efforts to combat sex trafficking and child exploitation are crucial in keeping our communities safe.
