Kristopher M. Voyles, Theft of Government Property, Tennessee 2021

Kristopher M. Voyles, a 31-year-old man from Georgia, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for stealing medical treatment using a veteran’s identity. This egregious crime occurred in Greeneville, Tennessee, where Voyles was found guilty of theft of over $1,000 of government property.

As part of a negotiated plea agreement, Voyles pled guilty to the charges and will be required to make restitution of $20,502 to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. This amount represents the value of the medical goods, items, and services that Voyles stole from the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

According to court records, Voyles is not a veteran and has never served in the United States military. However, on October 9, 2019, he used the name, date of birth, and social security number of a United States veteran when receiving medical services at a hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The next day, while still impersonating the veteran, Voyles obtained a transfer to the VA Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He used fraudulently obtained identification documents, including a Form DD214, to facilitate the transfer. For approximately a week, Voyles accepted medical goods, items, and services from the VA Medical Center, ultimately stealing a total of $20,502.

When apprehended, Voyles still had the veteran’s identification documents with him, including the fraudulently obtained Form DD214. This disturbing case highlights the severity of identity theft and the importance of protecting sensitive information.

The investigation into Voyles’ crimes was led by Special Agent Charles Pack from the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mac Heavener represented the United States in the case.

Voyles’ sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in protecting the integrity of government services and ensuring that those who commit crimes are held accountable.
