DANVILLE, VA – Kunta Daniels, 43, is headed to federal prison for over a decade after being convicted as a key player in a Danville-area drug ring. Daniels was sentenced last week to 156 months – thirteen years – for his role in distributing poison throughout the community.
The sentencing follows a guilty plea entered in October 2021 to one count of possessing with the intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possessing with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. Federal prosecutors detailed how Daniels, alongside his uncle, Joe Ali Daniels (already sentenced to 87 months), flooded the streets with deadly narcotics.
Between November 2019 and March 2020, Daniels operated a sophisticated drug storage and distribution network from the Colonial Court apartments in Danville. He didn’t just live there; he rented a second apartment directly above his own, transforming it into a dedicated “stash house” for narcotics. This wasn’t a small-time operation. The scale of the enterprise became clear when law enforcement raided the upper-floor apartment in March 2020.
The search uncovered a full drug-packaging operation: food saver bags, precise digital scales, substantial quantities of heroin and cocaine, and the cutting agents used to stretch their profits. But it wasn’t just drugs. Investigators also seized multiple firearms, body armor – suggesting a readiness for violence – and a staggering $10,000 in cash, the dirty money earned from preying on addiction.
“This case demonstrates our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations that plague our communities,” stated U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh of the Western District of Virginia. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Danville Police Department, highlighting the need for interagency cooperation in tackling serious crime.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachel Barish Swartz and Coleman Adams successfully prosecuted the case. While Daniels’ uncle, Joe Ali Daniels, is already behind bars, this sentencing sends a clear message: those who profit from the misery of others will face the full weight of federal justice. The ATF’s Washington Field Division, led by Special Agent in Charge Charlie J. Patterson, continues to target dangerous criminals and disrupt illicit networks across the region.”
