Kweisi Mfume, Violent Crime, Maryland 2004

In 2004, Kweisi Mfume a defendant in a federal criminal case, was accused of violating several laws in Maryland. The case, "U.S. v. Kweisi Mfume", was filed on September 7, 2004, at the Maryland District Federal Court.

The charges against Mfume included various counts of violating the federal election laws. According to reports, on October 7, 2004, Mfume, a former U.S. Representative and president of the NAACP, was accused of using campaign funds for personal expenses.

This included spending more than $31,000 on personal items such as jewelry, a home security system, and a 1999 BMW. Mfume allegedly used money from his 2002 congressional campaign for these personal expenses.

In the end, Mfume pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to the Federal Election Commission. He was fined $30,000 and ordered to pay $48,000 in restitution.
