Kyle Ashton Carpenter, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, South Dakota 2026

Grimy Times reports that Kyle Ashton Carpenter, a 26-year-old man from Watertown, South Dakota, has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

The sentencing took place on May 18, 2026, after Carpenter was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in federal court.

According to court records, Carpenter was found in possession of a handgun in early May 2025, despite being prohibited from doing so due to his prior felony conviction for assaulting a law enforcement officer. He was aware of his prohibition and had purchased the handgun, which he used at a firing range.

As part of his sentence, Carpenter was ordered to serve 12 months in custody, which he had already served since his arrest in May 2025. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri.

As part of the federal government's effort to combat violent crime, this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that aims to reduce gun violence and make communities safer.
