Kyle R. Evans, Meth & Gun Trafficking, Springfield MO, 2023

SPRINGFIELD, MO – Kyle R. Evans, 34, of Marshfield, Missouri, will spend the next 21 years and 10 months in federal prison after being sentenced today for trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough, adds significantly to the already substantial time Evans is serving in state custody.

The case dates back to June 18, 2017, when a Greene County Sheriff’s deputy spotted Evans speeding on a motorcycle. A short pursuit ended in a crash, and deputies discovered a Glock firearm lying near Evans, along with $1,633 in cash and five grams of methamphetamine in a nearby bag. Evans, already a convicted felon, was immediately in violation of federal law prohibiting firearm possession. His rap sheet includes convictions for domestic assault, assaulting a law enforcement officer, manufacturing meth, distributing controlled substances, assault, armed criminal action, and witness tampering.

But the 2017 incident wasn’t isolated. Court documents reveal a pattern of reckless behavior and disregard for the law. In August 2017, Evans fled from police, abandoning a firearm in the process. A month later, he led officers on another high-speed chase, resulting in another firearm being found in his vehicle. Most disturbingly, on November 16, 2017, Evans shot a victim identified as “K.B.” while stealing his motorcycle, and then actively conspired to intimidate a witness related to the shooting while incarcerated.

Evans is currently serving a 20-year state sentence for the shooting and motorcycle theft. He’s also serving a 15-year state sentence for a separate drug distribution conviction in Webster County. These sentences will run concurrently with the newly imposed federal sentence, meaning Evans faces a lengthy period behind bars with little chance of parole. Even while incarcerated, Evans continued to engage in criminal activity, joining the violent Southwest Honkys prison gang and threatening an individual believed to be a police informant, captured on a wiretap in 2017.

Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Josephine L. Stockard, successfully argued for the harsh sentence, highlighting Evans’s extensive criminal history and continued disregard for the law, even while already incarcerated. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Springfield Police Department, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF’s involvement underscores the federal government’s commitment to stemming the flow of illegal firearms used in drug trafficking operations.

The case serves as a stark reminder that individuals involved in drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession will face severe consequences, especially repeat offenders like Kyle R. Evans. Despite multiple opportunities to change his path, Evans continued to endanger the community, ultimately leading to a sentence that will likely keep him behind bars for decades. His history demonstrates a clear pattern of violent crime and a blatant disregard for the safety of others.
