Lamont Deshawn Byrd, Murder, North Carolina 2011

Lamont Deshawn Byrd, 22, was sentenced to life in prison for the first-degree murder of Officer Warren Basco 'Sneak' Lewis III, a member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

On June 9, 2011, Byrd shot and killed Lewis with a Beretta .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol as Lewis was coming down the stairs from the upstairs apartment at 602-A West Lenoir Avenue, Kinston, North Carolina.

Byrd had previously murdered Thomas Terrell Hinton on June 2, 2011, in Kinston, North Carolina, and then stole his bicycle. He was one of several suspects who were being sought by law enforcement at the time of the shooting.

Byrd pleaded guilty to the charges on August 4, 2014, and was sentenced to life in prison.

U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker for the Eastern District of North Carolina stated, 'The death of Special Deputy Lewis is a tragedy for his family and all of us in the law enforcement community.'

Director Stacia Hylton of the U.S. Marshals Service added, 'Warren Lewis will always be remembered to us and the entire law enforcement community as a hero and for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.'

Byrd's sentence marks the end of a lengthy and tragic case that resulted in the loss of life for a dedicated law enforcement officer.
