Pittsburgh Woman Sentenced to Prison for Illegally Possessing Firearms
In a stark reminder of the severe consequences of violating federal firearms laws, Latisha Butler, a 29-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment (24 months) and two years of supervised release.
According to information presented to the court, on or about May 14, 2018, Butler knowingly and unlawfully possessed a Smith & Wesson Model M&P-15 Rifle, a Smith & Wesson, Model SD9VE handgun, a Diamondback Model DB9 Handgun, and various types of ammunition.
Federal law explicitly prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year from possessing a firearm or ammunition. Butler's prior felony conviction for Possession with the Intent to Distribute Controlled Substances rendered her ineligible to possess any firearms or ammunition.
The United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Scott W. Brady, commended the agencies involved in the investigation, including the United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Postal Inspection Service, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, for their tireless efforts in bringing Butler to justice.
Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, ensuring that Butler would face the consequences of her actions.
