Lawrence W. Nelson, Assault of Prison Staff, Pennsylvania 2019

A federal inmate has pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison staff member at the McKean Federal Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania.

Lawrence W. Nelson, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of infliction of bodily injury in federal court. The assault occurred on or about July 10, 2019.

Nelson assaulted the staff member, resulting in a broken nose, black eye, and concussion. The incident led to an investigation by the McKean Federal Correctional Institution and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Paul S. Sellers on behalf of the government.

Nelson will be sentenced on May 28, 2020, at 12:45 p.m. The law provides for a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.

The actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offense and Nelson's prior criminal history, if any.
