Leon Fenner, Armed Robbery, New York 2014
On November 11, 2014, a brazen armed robbery shook the Diamond District in Manhattan. Two men, including Leon Fenner, 58, of New York, New York, carried out the heist, leaving a trail of destruction and terror in their wake.
According to the allegations, Fenner and his accomplice entered the store, posing as a messenger and a lookout, respectively. Fenner brandished a black semiautomatic gun and pistol-whipped a bystander. The Owner and three others present in the store were forced to empty over $600,000 worth of jewelry from a safe and other locations and into Fenner's bag.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD), was a collaborative effort that involved fingerprint analysis and surveillance images. The teamwork and relentless pursuit exhibited by the newly formed ATF-led SPARTA task force, coupled with a focused prosecution team, were instrumental in bringing Fenner to justice.
Fenner was identified and arrested in Suitland, Maryland, on November 12, 2014. He was presented in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles B. Day.
The charges against Fenner include one count of armed robbery, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and one count of brandishing of a firearm in connection with that robbery, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a seven-year mandatory minimum sentence.
Fenner's case serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement will not tolerate brazen acts of violence. The New York City Police Department, along with its law enforcement partners, will continue to track down each person responsible for this crime until all parties are in custody and held accountable.
