Leslie Muniz, Tax Evasion, Florida 2020
A Winter Park tax business owner has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for her role in filing hundreds of fraudulent tax returns in Florida.
According to court documents, Leslie Muniz, owner of Royalty Tax Services, prepared or caused her employees to prepare false tax returns for clients claiming false itemized deductions and fake Schedule C businesses and business losses.
Muniz's scheme resulted in a total loss of over $1.6 million to the United States.
In addition to her prison sentence, Muniz was also ordered to pay $1,615,143 in restitution to the United States.
The scheme took place between 2012 and 2016, with Muniz using tax preparation numbers assigned to her employees to file the fraudulent tax returns with the IRS.
When employees at Royalty Tax Services questioned Muniz about her tax practices or her use of their tax preparation numbers, she fired them.
The case was investigated by IRS – Criminal Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Chauncey A. Bratt.
Muniz had pleaded guilty on August 20, 2019, to aiding and abetting the filing of false federal income tax returns.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat tax fraud and protect the integrity of the tax system.
