Bullets and Bluster: Witness Tampering Lands Indiana Man Behind Bars for 13 Years

In a shocking display of brazen intimidation, 21-year-old Logan Mediate of Indianapolis, Indiana, pointed a sawed-off shotgun at a confidential informant and threatened to kill them after learning the informant’s cooperation led to Mediate’s mother’s arrest for distributing methamphetamine.

On February 26, 2014, the FBI arrested Jennifer Gaddy, Mediate’s mother, for distributing methamphetamine. Mediate’s anger boiled over when he confronted the informant on March 17, 2014, in the Mars Hill area of Indianapolis.

Mediate brandished the sawed-off shotgun and pointed it at the informant, repeating his threat to kill them. The FBI later recovered the shotgun and photographs of Mediate posing with the firearm from his Facebook page.

This is not Mediate’s first run-in with the law. In 2012, a Marion County jury found Mediate not guilty of charges stemming from a double homicide in Indianapolis.

Mediate’s 156-month prison sentence, amounting to 13 years, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt. The sentence also includes five years of supervised release upon Mediate’s release from incarceration.

U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler vowed that those who threaten or intimidate witnesses will face the full force of federal prosecution. ‘Violent crime cannot be tolerated in our neighborhoods,’ Minkler stated.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force and prosecuted by Bradley A. Blackington, Senior Litigation Counsel for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
