Logan Nelson, Abandonment and Abuse of a Child, New Mexico 2022
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO - A Fruitland man has been charged with abandoning and abusing a child, resulting in great bodily harm.
Logan Nelson, 20, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, appeared in federal court on an indictment charging him with three counts of abandonment and abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm.
According to the indictment, in October 2022, Nelson placed Jane Doe, a minor, in a situation which endangered her life, causing great bodily harm to her ulna, humerus, ribs, tibia, and right fibula.
An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted of the most serious allegation, Nelson faces a minimum of 18 years and up to 54 years in prison.
Nelson will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled. The United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Alexander M.M. Uballez, and the FBI's Albuquerque Field Office announced the charges against Nelson.
The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI's Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with the assistance of the Navajo Police Department and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brittany DuChaussee is prosecuting the case.
