A 36-year-old Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a 2018 killing near Union Station, the Grimy Times has learned.
MacArthur Venable was found guilty of second-degree murder while armed, a charge he pleaded to in February 2020. The plea, which was contingent upon the court’s approval, called for a sentence between 15 and 18 years.
Venable’s sentencing comes after a heated argument with the victim, James Ferrell, on October 31, 2018. The two men were walking down Massachusetts Avenue when the argument escalated, and Venable pulled out a firearm and shot Ferrell twice in the chest.
Ferrell, 34, ran across the street and collapsed in front of the National Postal Museum before being pronounced dead at the hospital.
Venable was arrested on December 20, 2018, and has been in custody ever since. In announcing the sentence, Acting U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert J. Contee commended the work of those who investigated the case, including the U.S. Capitol Police.
The case was investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Shehzad Akhtar prosecuted the matter. Venable will be placed on five years of supervised release after serving his prison term.
