Council Bluffs Man Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Firearm

A 23-year-old Council Bluffs man has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm, announced United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel.

Jonathan S. Featherstone was sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey on December 13, 2016, for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.

Featherstone was convicted of a prior felony offense in July of 2015 and was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm pistol during a traffic stop by the Council Bluffs Police Department on February 17, 2016.

Featherstone had entered a guilty plea on July 14, 2016, to the charge of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

The investigation into Featherstone’s activities was conducted by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Featherstone will serve three years of supervised release following his time in prison, as part of his sentence. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of firearm possession by prohibited individuals.

According to law enforcement officials, Featherstone’s actions put himself and others at risk of harm. The sentence handed down by Judge Jarvey reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need for accountability.
