A 48-year-old man from El Salvador has been sentenced to prison for illegally re-entering the United States.

Manuel De Jesus Segovia, a citizen of El Salvador and resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a 98-day prison term after pleading guilty to one count of illegal re-entry into the United States.

According to court documents, Segovia had previously been deported from the United States and illegally re-entered the country without permission.

Segovia's first known illegal entry into the United States occurred in October 2004, when he was apprehended by immigration officials at the border. He was released on his own recognizance and absconded from ICE supervision. Segovia was not found by immigration officials until March 2007 and was first deported in June 2007.

Segovia was again deported in March 2014 after illegally re-entering the United States. On two consecutive days in June 2022, Segovia was apprehended at the border and returned to Mexico. On March 13, 2024, immigration officials learned Segovia had illegally returned to the United States and arrested him near his residence in Cedar Rapids.

Segovia was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

Segovia is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be turned over to immigration officials.
