Kansas City Man Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for Meth Conspiracy

Kansas City, MO - In a shocking turn of events, a Kansas City man was sentenced to a staggering 40 years in federal prison without parole for his role in a meth-trafficking conspiracy.

Marcell Shavers, 27, of Kansas City, was convicted by a trial jury on March 1, 2018, of participating in a conspiracy to possess methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.

The case against Shavers took a dark turn when Kansas City, MO, police officers responded to a reported shooting on January 1, 2014. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Jose Medellin, who had been fatally shot. Several shell casings were found at the scene, along with two plastic bags containing more than 55 grams of methamphetamine in Medellin's possession.

An eyewitness reported that the shooting occurred after Medellin was approached by co-defendant James P. Roberts, 27, of Kansas City, MO, who asked about obtaining methamphetamine. Roberts had met with Medellin to conduct a drug deal, during which the fatal shooting took place.

Shavers later admitted to another person that he and Roberts had met with Medellin to conduct a drug deal. Roberts pleaded guilty on February 1, 2018, to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, which resulted in the killing of Medellin. Roberts will be sentenced to between 20 and 30 years in federal prison without parole.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeffrey Valenti and Joseph M. Marquez. It was investigated by the Kansas City, MO, Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The 40-year sentence handed down to Shavers is a stark reminder of the severity of methamphetamine trafficking and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and communities.
