MADISON, WI - A Madison Man's Deadly Habit Lands Him Behind Bars

Marcus Brinkley, a 23-year-old Madison resident, was sentenced to 54 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. Brinkley's prison term will be followed by three years of supervised release.

Brinkley's crime was uncovered during a controlled delivery of narcotics. Law enforcement officers, part of the Dane County Narcotics Task Force and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force, recovered a loaded handgun from Brinkley's motel room on the nightstand. Brinkley, a convicted felon, is prohibited from legally possessing firearms or ammunition.

At sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson highlighted the danger Brinkley posed to the public, citing the nature of Brinkley's prior convictions and his conduct in this case. Despite Brinkley's young age, Judge Peterson balanced the aggravating factors to arrive at the sentence.

The charge against Brinkley was the result of an investigation conducted by the Dane County Narcotics Task Force and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Louis Glinzak prosecuted this case.
