Marcus Herring, Violent Crime, Florida 2018

On March 27, 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the filing of a federal indictment against Marcus Herring, a 32-year-old resident of Florida. According to the indictment, Herring was charged with one count of Interference with Commerce by Robbery and one count of Brandishing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence. The charges stemmed from a robbery that took place on February 8, 2018, at a convenience store in Miami, Florida. Herring allegedly entered the store, brandished a firearm, and demanded cash from the store clerk. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, Herring fled the scene on foot. The FBI launched an investigation, which led to Herring's subsequent arrest and indictment. At the time of his indictment, Herring was being held without bond in the Federal Detention Center in Miami. If convicted, Herring faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment for the Interference with Commerce by Robbery charge and a mandatory minimum of 10 years to life imprisonment for the Brandishing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence charge.

On October 15, 2019, Marcus Herring pleaded guilty to both charges in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 10 years. Herring's case served as an example of the federal government's commitment to combating violent crime and protecting the safety of its citizens.
