East Chicago Man Charged with Murder in Aid of Racketeering
Marcus Lovell Jenkins, 26, of East Chicago, Indiana, has been charged with murder in aid of racketeering and use of a firearm in connection with a crime of violence for his alleged role in the killing of Kemond Coleman.
According to the indictment, Jenkins and Charles Garcia-Berrios, 22, of Hammond, Indiana, who is also a member of the Two Six Nation street gang, shot and killed Coleman on July 26, 2014, for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing their positions within the gang.
Jenkins is also charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Garcia-Berrios and Two Six member Julio Ivan Cartagena were previously charged with the attempted murders of two individuals in this case. All three defendants are in federal custody.
The case is the result of the investigative efforts of the FBI, the ATF, the East Chicago Police Department, the Hammond Police Department, the Lake County, Indiana, Sheriff's Department, and Lake County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area officers and agents. The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Andrew Creighton of the Criminal Division's Organized Crime and Gang Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Nozick of the Northern District of Indiana.
Jenkins is currently in federal custody. The indictment alleges that Jenkins and Garcia-Berrios are members of the Two Six Nation street gang.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
