CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a serious blow to the opioid epidemic, Mark Jay Courtney, a 40-year-old man from Montrose, West Virginia, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for distributing heroin.

Courtney was found guilty of one count of ‘Distribution of Heroin’ in October 2018, after admitting to selling heroin in Randolph County in January 2018.

The investigation, which received funding from the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF), allowed federal and state agencies to work together to identify, investigate, and prosecute major interstate and international drug trafficking organizations.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner successfully prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Mountain Region Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force led the investigation.

In a statement regarding the sentence, officials emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who engage in heroin distribution, which has devastating effects on individuals and communities.
