Indiana Businessman Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Mail Fraud

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Mark M. Palombaro, a 55-year-old former Senior Vice President of Development at Simon Property Group, Inc., has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for mail fraud in a Pennsylvania court.

According to information presented to the court, Palombaro was involved in a scheme to defraud Robert E. Crawford, owner of R.E. Crawford Construction, Inc. of Springdale, Pa.

In 2006 and 2007, Palombaro used his authority and influence at Simon Property Group to select Crawford's company as the general contractor for two major construction projects, the Northgate Mall in Seattle, Washington, and the Laguna Hills Mall in Laguna Hills, California.

Palombaro received approximately $766,000 from Crawford, which he allegedly used to further his own interests.

U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the Internal Revenue Service and the United States Postal Inspection Service for their investigation into Palombaro's activities.

Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Palombaro's sentence includes 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
