Mark Nicholas Espinosa, Theft, Bank Robbery, Kentucky 2023

A shocking case of theft and bank robbery came to a close in Louisville, Kentucky, as former armored truck driver Mark Nicholas Espinosa was sentenced to 37 months imprisonment and ordered to pay $932,285.22 in restitution.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, Espinosa was charged with five counts related to the theft of over $900,000 from an armored truck in December 2018.

The charges included theft from a common carrier, bank robbery, interstate transportation of stolen money, monetary transactions involving stolen money, and money laundering.

On December 5, 2018, Espinosa and a partner were collecting money from various businesses in the Louisville area when Espinosa made off with $932,285.22 in cash from the back of the truck.

Espinosa fled the scene, abandoning the truck in the Jefferson Mall parking lot, and made his way to Connecticut, where he was arrested living under the name Sam Smith.

During the investigation, authorities recovered $892,737.89 in cash from Espinosa's Connecticut apartment.

The case was investigated by the Louisville Metro Police Department Robbery Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys David Weiser and Rob Bonar.

U.S. Attorney Russell Coleman praised the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, saying, 'When the FBI, LMPD, and U.S. Attorney's Office collaborate as partners, the people of Louisville are the beneficiaries and thieves such as Mr. Espinosa pay the price.'
