Mark Phillips, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Nebraska 2023
A shocking act of violence rocked the quiet town of Walthill, Nebraska, when 60-year-old Mark Phillips allegedly stabbed his adult son with a kitchen knife in their family home.
According to the evidence presented in court, on September 21, 2012, Phillips committed the heinous crime, leaving his victim with a 3-centimeter wound. Fortunately, the victim was treated and released from medical care.
The case was brought to federal court due to Phillips' status as a Native American and the fact that the crime occurred within the Omaha Indian Reservation.
Mark Phillips, the defendant, was recently sentenced to 33 months of imprisonment in the United States District Court in Omaha. The sentence was handed down by the Honorable Lyle E. Strom, Senior Judge. In the federal system, there is no parole, so Phillips will serve his full sentence without the possibility of early release.
After his release from prison, Phillips will begin a 3-year term of supervised release. This means he will be under the close supervision of the authorities, with strict guidelines to follow to ensure his rehabilitation and integration back into society.
United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg expressed her appreciation to the Omaha Tribal Police Department and the FBI for their thorough investigation into this matter. The collaboration between these agencies helped bring the perpetrator to justice and ensured that the victim received the support they needed during this difficult time.
In a statement, Gilg acknowledged the dedication of the investigators and praised their efforts in securing the conviction.
