Felony Child Abuse Charge Rocks Neopit Community
An 18-year-old Neopit woman has been slapped with a felony child abuse charge after allegedly striking a child under the age of one with her elbow on January 6, 2020, at a residence on the Menominee Indian Reservation.
According to a federal indictment, Markala K. Waukau, of Neopit, Wisconsin, faces a maximum of three years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release if convicted of the crime.
The indictment alleges that Waukau's actions resulted in a fractured skull and hematomas for the young victim.
The Menominee Tribal Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, which will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier.
An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt, and Waukau is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
Waukau is set to face a fair trial at which the government must prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
