Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands 27-Month Prison Sentence

In a recent case, a West Lafayette man has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Markith Williams, 39, of West Lafayette, Indiana, was found guilty of the crime in a two-day jury trial.

The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon. As part of his sentence, Williams will also serve two years of supervised release.

According to documents in the case, a traffic stop on January 13, 2022, in Jasper County, Indiana, led to the recovery of a loaded semi-automatic pistol. Williams' criminal history revealed three prior Illinois felony convictions, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and delivery of cocaine.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Hammond Police Department, and the Jasper County Sheriff's Department investigated the case. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Patrick D. Grindlay and Assistant United States Attorney Kristian R. Mukoski.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
