Sioux Falls Man Indicted for Methamphetamine Conspiracy

Marques Smith, a 37-year-old Sioux Falls man, has been charged with Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, a federal crime.

According to a recent federal indictment, Smith allegedly conspired with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine from January 1, 2011, to October 11, 2017.

The maximum penalty for this crime is up to life in federal prison, a fine of up to $10,000,000, up to life of supervised release, and a $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Restitution may also be ordered as part of the sentence.

Smith appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 16, 2019, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.

The investigation into Smith's activities is being conducted by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook serving as the prosecuting attorney.

Smith has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, with a trial date yet to be set.

It is essential to note that the charge against Smith is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
